This was the first year for the playoff system used in promotions to higher divisions.
Swindon Town were winners of the play-offs and were thus promoted. Second Division club
Sunderland also participated in the Division Three playoffs, but lost in the first round,
thus they were relegated to Division Three. Bolton Wanderers participated in the Fourth
Division playoffs as they finished in 21st place. They lost in the first round of the
play-offs and were thus relegated to the Fourth Division for next season.
