** Football League Notes **
The 1919-20 season was the first season since the end of World War I. The Football League expanded to
22 clubs, thus adding four new clubs (5 total). The new clubs that started the season included: West
Ham United, South Shields, Stoke and Rotherham United. Lincoln City were not re-elected, but they
returned to the league later, for the season 1921–22, surfacing this time in 3rd Division North, after
having been absent only for one season. Grimsby Town were the first Second Division club to be relegated
to the newly formed Third Division and thus participated in the Football League Third Division for the
1920-21 season. Leeds City were expelled from the League after only 8 games; thus Port Vale, formerly
Burslem Port Vale, were invited to join the League and they took their place and inherited their record.
After the season, Leeds City was dissolved in due to financial irregularities. A new club, Leeds United
was formed in 1919 and took over their Elland Road stadium.
