** Football League Notes **
Chesterfield successfully applied for a place in the Second Division of the Football League coming from
the Midland League. After turning professional in 1899, Middlesborough were admitted to the Football League,
backed by local neighbours Newcastle United and Sunderland. Luton Town lost to re-election and rejoined the
Southern League after poor attendance, high wages and the high travel hurt the club. Loughborough failed to
gain re-election to the League in 1900 after finishing in last place and the second worst record in League
history, the club applied for acceptance back into the Midland League, but failed to turn up for the fixtures
meeting and it was decided that the club was defunct.
