** Test Matches Notes **
The test matches were a kind of play-offs, in which the bottom 1st Division teams faced the top 2nd
Division teams. The 1st Division teams, if coming out as winners, would retain their places in the
division. If a 2nd Division team won, it would be considered for 1st Division membership through an
election process. Losing 2nd Division teams would stay in the 2nd Division.
** Test Match #1 **
Bury (2nd Div. Champion) vs. Liverpool (1st Div. 16th place).
Bury won the test match 1-0 and thus were elected to play in the First Division,
while Liverpool were invited to join the Second Division.
** Test Match #2 **
Notts County (2nd Div. 2nd place) vs. Derby County (1st Div. 15th place).
Derby County won the test match 2-1 and were re-elected to join the First Division,
while Notts County were invited to rejoin the Second Division.
** Test Match #3 **
Newton Heath (2nd Div. 3rd place) vs. Stoke (1st Div. 14th place).
Stoke won the test match 3-0 and were re-elected to join the First Division,
while Newton Heath were invited to rejoin the Second Division.
Other Notes ~ Walsall Town Swifts resigned from Football League. The three new clubs (Bury,
Burton Wanderers and Leicester Fosse) were invited to join the Second Division to replace
Middlesbrough Ironopolis who folded, Northwich Victoria, which resigned from the Football
League and lastly, the expansion of the Second Division to 16 total clubs.
