** Relegation/Promotion Notes **
This was the first year for the playoff system used in promotions to higher divisions. Sunderland participated in the Division Three Playoffs and lost in first round, thus were relegated to the 1987-88 Third Division. Charlton Athletic, who finished in 19th place in the First Division, participated in the Second Division playoffs and won the in the final against Leeds United, thus Charlton was not relegated and no other clubs gained promotion to the First Division.

Second Division club Sunderland also participated in the Division Three playoffs, but lost in the first round, thus they were relegated to Division Three. Bolton Wanderers participated in the Fourth Division playoffs as they finished in 21st place. They lost in the first round of the play-offs and were thus relegated to the Fourth Division for next season.
