** Test Matches Notes **
The test matches were a kind of play-offs, in which the bottom 1st Division teams faced the top 2nd Division teams. The 1st Division teams, if coming out as winners, would retain their places in the division. If a 2nd Division team won, it would be considered for 1st Division membership through an election process. Losing 2nd Division teams would stay in the 2nd Division.

** Test Match #1 **
Liverpool (2nd Div. Champion) vs. Newtown Heath (1st Div. 16th place).
Liverpool won the test match 2-0 and thus were elected to play in the First Division, while Newton Heath were invited to join into the Second Division.

** Test Match #2 **
Small Heath (2nd Div. 2nd place) vs. Darwen (1st Div. 15th place).
Small Heath won the test match 3-1 and thus were elected to play in the First Division, while Darwen were invited to join into the Second Division.

** Test Match #3 **
Notts County (2nd Div. 3rd place) vs. Preston North End (1st Div. 14th place).
Preston North End won the test match 4-0 and were elected to stay in the First Division, while Notts County were re-elected to stay in the Second Division.

Other Notes ~ Middlesbrough Ironopolis folded at the end of the season for financial reasons. Northwich Victoria resigned from the Football League to play regional football. Liverpool, Newcastle United and Woolwich Arsenal were added to the League when the Second Division expanded from 12 to 15 clubs.
