** Test Matches Notes **
The test matches were a kind of play-offs, in which the bottom 1st Division teams faced the top 2nd
Division teams. The 1st Division teams, if coming out as winners, would retain their places in the
division. If a 2nd Division team won, it would be considered for 1st Division membership through an
election process. Losing 2nd Division teams would stay in the 2nd Division.
** Test Match #1 **
Small Heath (2nd Div. Champion) vs. Newtown Heath (1st Div. 16th place).
The teams played to a 1-1 draw, consequently they played a rematch which Newton Heath
won 5-2, thus Newtown Heath were re-elected to the First Division and Small Heath ended
back in the Second Division.
** Test Match #2 **
Sheffield United (2nd Div. 2nd place) vs. Accrington (1st Div. 15th place).
Sheffield United won the test match 1-0 and were promoted to the First Division, while
Accrington resigned from the league altogether.
** Test Match #3 **
Darwen (2nd Div. 3rd place) vs. Notts County (1st Div. 14th place).
Darwen won the test match 3-2 and were promoted to the First Division, while
Notts County resigned from the league altogether.
Other Notes ~ Bootle disbanded at the end of the season apparently due to financial problems.
