First a chronological history of the United States and war. Click on the banner at the bottom to enter the "War Movie Themes & Image" homepage. 1754-63 French & Indian War It wasn't until 1756 that war was officially declared between the French and British. The military activity that year and the following was relatively inconclusive, though the French generally had the upper hand, capturing Fort Oswego on Lake Ontario and Fort William Henry. In 1758 the tide began to turn and the British started to take the upper hand. Peace was not resolved until 1764. 1775-81 Revolutionary War General Washington led the Americans across the Delaware River on Christmas Eve. On Christmas Day, the Continental Army won an arousing victory at the Battle of Trenton. It was the American's first major victory during our fight for independence. The war would last until 1781, when Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown. 1812-15 War Of 1812 The British bombardment of Fort McHenry began at 5:00 a.m. on the morning of September 13th 1814, a young lawyer named Francis Scott Key watched the red glare of the British rockets, the bombs bursting in air over the Fort and wrote a poem about the "Star Spangled Banner" that was still flying over the fort after a siege of three days and nights. 1846-48 Mexican-American War During the Battle of Churubusco, some of the fiercest fighting of the war, the Mexicans were once again unable to halt the American advance. Soon afterwards, the Mexicans seeked a truce to end hostilities and the war. Peace failed and the war continued until General Scott took control of Mexico City. 1861-65 The Civil War The dead litter the battlefield at Gettysburg after Union forces repelled the now famous "Pickett's Charge". There was never any more American casualties in one battle than at Gettysburg, July 1-3 1863. The Confederacy never recovered from this very tragic battle during the Civil War. 1898-99 Spanish-American War Admiral Dewey led the American Navy in the Philippines against the Spanish Navy. It was one of the most lopsided losses ever for Spain and led to the complete end of the Spainish empire. On the other hand, the US gained the Philippines, which did not gain their independence until after World War II. 1914-18 World War I "The culminating manifestation of naval force in the history of the world", Winston Churchill. The Battle of Jutland during the "Great War" on May 31, 1916 was a major blow for the German Navy. Of the 64 ships that were involved, the British actually lost more, but still claimed victory. 1941-45 World War II The battleship USS Arizona was sunk taking 1,170 lives with it during the Japanese attack of Pearl Harbor on Dec 7, 1941. President Roosevelt made his now famous speech which said, "a date which will live in infamy..." On Dec 11, Germany declared war on the United States. 1950-53 Korean War The "Forgotten War" was the first war fought against communism when the the Chinese led North Koreans invaded the south. Both sides eventually agreed to a truce creating the famous 38th parallel border. 1965-75 Vietnam War The Vietnam War is the only war that we lost as a nation. During the 1960's, many people protested the war. It was a war which nobody in the US wanted to win. Lastly, the Vietnam War was also the first war seen everyday during the national news broadcasts. 1990-91 Persian Gulf War Coalition forces from around the war helped to defeat Saddam Hussein and his Iraqi army after they invaded Kuwait in 1990.
